Dear students in the Low-Intermediate class at Advance English Academy in Berkeley - WELCOME to my student blog for English language learning.
The first thing I would like all of you to do is to become familiar with the use of the American Corpus, otherwise known as COCA. You can see it on the right banner. Everyone, please register for COCA, it is free and it is a fabulous tool for anyone interested in the English language, students, teachers, linguists, anyone!
Today in class we examined the use of the prepositions (PREP) 'in,' 'on' and 'at.'
This is what I did to get my results:
Under DISPLAY - click LIST
under COLLOCATES (words that live near each other) type in [nn*] for nouns (N)
for the numbers I checked 0 in the L column and 2 in the R column.
Then I clicked SEARCH.
The POS stands for parts of speech. If you click on this it will give you all the codes for POS, [nn*] for all nouns, [v*] for all verbs, [j*] for all adjectives, etc.
Because I forgot to remind you that I would give you a test tomorrow, I will give you one on Monday instead.
See you tomorrow and please bring me your questions.
Denise
