Hi!  I have created this blog for my students at Berkeley English Academy.  I thought it would be a nice place for us to chat about anything in English!  But I especially would like for us to develop a forum where we can tell each other about volunteering opportunities and go out into the world together and do something for our mother earth!

I decided to call our blog flowers are mandalas, because flowers are beautiful messengers of nature.  For our first volunteer activity I would like to work with EBMUD on May 23rd restoring a creek in an East Bay watershed.  Let's work on this together.  I need everyone's input to make this happen.  With love - Denise

  1. Hi Denise
that sounds wonderful...unfortunately I will not be there on may 23rd. Actually I will take 3 weeks of vacation at the end of this week because I'm getting married on may 16th, and after I will go on a road-trip to Yosemite Park and Death Valley until may 25th.
So maybe next time. But I'm looking forward to hear about it when I come back! I am sure it could be a lot of fun!

  6. Hi dear friends,

This is Amana. I would like to introduce myself, but sorry that I don't have enough time to write it here. I would appreciate it, if you could go to my website (www.luminaconnections.com), which I created from scratch using DreamWeaver. Please go to About Amana page if you are interested..
I enjoy connecting with you. Very nice class.
I apologize for being not a good student.

Denise, this blog seems to be a good idea if you could actually check and edit English written by your students.. I would really appreciate it. But I believe that you don't have to do it, since it would be too much work on top of your own studies.

    Blessings,
    Amana

  7. Hi Amana!

I don't have time to check your website tonight, but I will as soon as I have time - how impressive that you designed your own site!

I feel truly blessed to be able to work with a group like you. Amana, I will do my best indeed to check some writing features as I read your entries here. Also, since this is all new to me, I really need all of you to help make this a really fun and interactive "meeting point" for all of us.

I am really happy that you have joined our group - it is an honor to have you with us.

I am working on a paper right now for my pedagogical grammar class - it is about the lesson we shared about the ecological footprint. I also need to figure out which classes to take next semester - see you in class tomorrow - Denise

  8. Hi Denise

I'm sorry but I'm not feeling very well today. I'm sure it's just fatigue but, better safe than sorry as we learned yesterday,so I will stay at home today.

Here is a very interesting website about swine flue, with practical information (symptoms, prevention...):
    www.cdc.gov/swineflu/swineflu_you.htm

    Enjoy the concert!

  9. Hi Cécile,

I hope you are feeling better! Yes, it is best to be safe than sorry! I will check out the website now. We went to see and hear "New Music" today at Hertz Hall and it was a little too avantgard for us I think! But, it was certainly an interesting experience, one I don't think any of us will forget. I hope to see you in class - otherwise take care of yourself and rest up! See you soon - Denise

  12. Hi everyone,
Please feel free to post anything over the weekend.

I wanted to give everyone the "heads up" that next week we will be visiting the SFMOMA (SF Museum of Modern Art) on Tuesday, the 5th of May since it is a free day. We will probably leave school around 10:00.

Also, though our experience with "New Music" was odd yesterday - we really should go to listen to the Indonesian Gamelon music at Hertz Hall for the free noon concert next week. Last year Anatoliy joined the group when we went to hear this music - maybe he can give you his opinion here about it.

Go to this website so you can hear a sample of Gamelan music, it's like trance music. I hope you like it.

    Hope to hear from you!

  15. Hi everyone,

I'm posting this really late on Tuesday - just got back from my study group in SF - and still have to do homework - this is a reminder that we are going to the gamelan concert tomorrow at Hertz Hall. Hope you can all come. Also, feel free to post anything - including any English questions you may have here!

Our field trip to the SFMOMA today was quite amazing. Btw - I think it's free this Sunday for mother's day - I am probably going to go again then! The exhibition on the fourth floor - Kentridge - was spectacular and quite unforgettable. Looking forward to sharing our feelings about this artist and his thought provoking oeuvre tomorrow.

See you in the morning, Denise

  18. We had a great time in SFMOMA. We saw the exhibiton of Kentridge. His background of life is South Africa. In his work, I come to realize the mood of Africa. He mainly used charcoal basically at first and finished his work using motion picture, animation, light, sculpture, painting and so on. Maybe he is a genius. (He used various skills to express his artistic feeling) I thought he had much interested in music. Because his background music in his work was very unique. He used classical music of Mozart and cello in addition to South African music. I think he has a very creative mind.

  19. Hi everyone,

Thank you ALL for your postings. Mandy is right, Kentridge is a genius. Free showing at the SFMOMA this Sunday if you want to go - also 1/2 price from 6-9 pm on Thursday - you should go if you missed it - IT IS WORTH it - I assure you.

The Gamelan concert was a treat - very beautiful and quite relaxing... We will talk about it tomorrow in class.

See you tomorrow, we'll work on grammar, we'll read and you will do some writing - keep posting here if you like.

    Love, Denise

  20. hi....
yesterday l went to see a musical event about one of the shakespears sonnets.the concerst was at the unuversitiy concert hall and it was free.the hall was almost full with atendees.a young woman who was looking like loreana mccannith played harp and another was a man who played piano, the last personwas a singer and she was the main artist on the stage.they were all good but she was extraordannrily good....
for me the best part of the stage was, when she sang AVE MARIA.l loved it.
the atmospher reminded me SHAKESPEARES times.l think he was one of the geniuses of the world.
