HW for 10/29/Short quiz 10/30 announcement/Halloween 10/31

Hello students,

The homework for tomorrow is to complete lesson 4A in the workbook.  Also make sure you are memorizing the verb forms on page 155.  There will be a short quiz on Wednesday 10/30 at 9:00 a.m. on the verb forms on page 155.  I will randomly select 10 verbs from that list to test you on Wednesday, so please begin to memorize those verbs if you haven't already.

Thursday as you know is Halloween.  Daniel in level 3 will be showing the scary movie, The Shining around 9:00 a.m.  After the movie he is offering students to carve pumpkins.   Today in my class no one expressed interest in carving, please let me know if you change your mind and I will tell Daniel.

We will have a short cultural lesson about Halloween tomorrow 10/30 and we will continue working in the student book, lesson 4B.  On 10/31 we will also discuss the movie The Shining, featuring Jack Nicholson.

See you tomorrow!

Advance English Academy - WELCOME

Dear students in the Low-Intermediate class at Advance English Academy in Berkeley - WELCOME to my student blog for English language learning.

The first thing I would like all of you to do is to become familiar with the use of the American Corpus, otherwise known as COCA.  You can see it on the right banner.  Everyone, please register for COCA, it is free and it is a fabulous tool for anyone interested in the English language, students, teachers, linguists, anyone!

Today in class we examined the use of the prepositions (PREP) 'in,' 'on' and 'at.'

This is what I did to get my results:

Under DISPLAY - click LIST

under COLLOCATES (words that live near each other) type in [nn*] for nouns (N)

for the numbers I checked 0 in the L column and 2 in the R column.

Then I clicked SEARCH.

The POS stands for parts of speech.  If you click on this it will give you all the codes for POS, [nn*] for all nouns, [v*] for all verbs, [j*] for all adjectives, etc.

Because I forgot to remind you that I would give you a test tomorrow,  I will give you one on Monday instead.

See you tomorrow and please bring me your questions.
